Designing merch for good: a campaign to combat anti-Asian racism

As an Asian American designer, I felt a deep urgency to respond to the rise in anti-Asian racism. I launched a charitable merch line to amplify the message of equality, raise awareness, and support organizations fighting hate and advocating for the AAPI community. The collection featured bold, message-driven designs including t-shirts, buttons, magnets, and stickers—that served as both a call to action and a symbol of solidarity.

Leveraging my design skills for social impact sparked meaningful conversations with friends, neighbors, and even strangers

Design as a Catalyst for Conversation

What I didn’t expect was how quickly this campaign would gain momentum. Friends, family, neighbors—even complete strangers—reached out with words of encouragement, stories of their own experiences, and most importantly, support. Seeing someone wearing a shirt I designed in my neighborhood, or receiving a message from someone who said it helped them feel seen, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

In just over a month, the campaign raised $1,600, all of which went to three organizations doing vital work:

This grassroots effort was powered by community love, allyship, and generosity—especially from Melrose and beyond. I'm proud and humbled to have turned design into a tool for activism, visibility, and change.

Designing this campaign was more than a creative project—it was a deeply personal and emotional journey. It reminded me why I became a designer in the first place: to connect, to communicate, and to care.
